ESTG - School of Technology and Management


The Informatics Engineering graduate course is designed according to modifications made to the education system basic law that derived from the implementation of the Bologna Process in the Portuguese higher education system, and resulted from the adjustment of the previous two-stage Information Systems Engineering course, existing in the Higher School of Technology and Management of the Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo, since 2002/2003.

Course Aims

According to the Decree Law of Academic Degrees and Higher Education Diplomas, the main goals of each degree cycle have been established considering the competences that should be acquired, adopting the results of the European level collective work that was concretized in the Dublin descriptors.

In this context, the graduate degree shall be conferred to students that demonstrate to have acquired the cognitive, practical and relational competences needed to practice professionally as Informatics Engineer and that spawn through Analysis, Design, Development, Maintenance and Administration of Computer Systems and Consulting.

Length and professional profile

The Informatics Engineering graduate course is 3 years long. According to the acquired competences, the future professional is able to execute the following computer science engineering acts:

  • Analysis, Design and Development
  • Specify, size, install and configure computer systems infra-structures, including communication networks, computers, peripheral equipment and base software;
  • Design, develop and install applications software, including subsystems integration, implementation of software for interconnecting subsystems and development of complete software applications;
  • Maintenance and Administration of Computer Systems
  • Systems functional monitoring, evolutive maintenance, information security, and the optimization of new or existing systems;
  • Consulting
  • Consulting addresses the definition of requirements for software solutions and for complete computer solutions, estimating budgets and producing bidding documents for the provision of computer solutions and the study and selection of existing technologies that meet the specified requirements.
