ESS - School of Health

The Nursing degree was created by Ordinance no. 799-G/99 and regulated by Ordinance 799-D/99, both on September 18th. The study programme is included in Ordinance 711/2000, of September 4th, amended by Ordinance no. 1250/2001, October 29th and no. 1273/2003, of November 7th. The study programme has been adapted to Bologna (with duration of 4 years), by the Directorate-General for Higher Education [DGES]: Order no. 6317/2008 (in Diário da Republica, II Series, no.  46, of March 5th, 2008). In 2014, amendments to the study programme were made, published in Diário da Republica (Official Gazette), Series II - no.209, October 29th - Ordinance 13159/2014.

Course Aims  

To assure a scientific, technical, human and cultural formation to contribute for a carefully nursing conduct/management for people along the life cycle, to family, groups and community, in different preventive levels.

To assure the necessary formation:

  1. In a participation in the Management of Services, Unities or Health Institutions;
  2. In a participation in the Nurseries formation and other Health Professionals;
  3. To develop the research practice in the health field.

Length and Professional Profile

The course lasts four years, it has a unique cycle and it is organized in semesters. The Nursing Licentiate is able to contribute and conduct the general nursing cares for people along the life cycle, to family, groups and community, in different preventive levels, for a participation in the conduct services, unities or health institutions, in the nurseries formation and other Health Professionals and to develop a practical research in the fields of Health and Nursing.

Career Prospects

The Nursing Licentiate can develop activities in public or private health centres directed for different preventive levels and guided for people, families and communities. Professional practice can be developed in health centres, particular institutions of social solidarity [day-nurseries, kindergarten, day centres, household for elder people and others], schools or companies in several different activities from a health promotion to a domiciliary visit, nursing cares for new-born babies, children that attend school and teenagers, adults or elder people. Other workplace for nurse's intervention is the hospital, no matter its differentiation degree, in medicine services, surgery, consultations, specially surgeries and medicals, urgency services, operating blocks or unities of continual cares.
